Where conventional construction projects would typically appoint the contractor with the largest scope as Principal Contractor, engineering projects are typically more phased, and contractors more specialist in nature which can make identifying an appropriate and willing candidate to supervise the whole works difficult.
CAPEX projects can contain a broader range of disciplines than the client may be used to supervising, often reaching into more traditional construction work than the more engineering focused shutdown periods. Conversely construction contractors can be less experienced in the hazards associated with process environments creating a risk gap.
